Spotify is taking steps to better identify and manage AI-generated music on its platform. Starting in September, artists created by artificial intelligence will carry an “AI persona” label on their profiles and track listings. This initiative is designed to help users differentiate between music made by human artists and that produced by AI, while also ensuring that real musicians maintain their visibility and exposure.
The platform will automatically exclude AI-generated personas from personalized recommendations, a move aimed at prioritizing genuine artists in the listener’s experience. Spotify will not solely rely on artists to disclose their AI-generated status; instead, the company plans to employ both human reviewers and AI-driven tools to spot any undisclosed AI personas.
This decision arrives amid a marked increase in AI-generated music, as Spotify has noted. The company reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a single year, underscoring the sheer volume of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms. As generative AI becomes a more prominent force in the music industry, distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated work is growing increasingly vital.
Spotify emphasizes that transparency is key as the prevalence of AI in music rises. Listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether the artists they are listening to are human or AI, highlighting the need for clear identification on streaming services. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to maintain a fair and transparent music ecosystem where real artists do not lose their platform to AI-generated content.
