Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have pledged $3 million to advance sustainable practices in Kazakhstan’s rare metals and rare earth minerals industry. The initiative, launched on October 30, is a collaboration between UNDP and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Construction, with financial backing from Japan.
This project aims to bolster environmental regulations, integrate advanced green technologies, and establish digital monitoring systems across the sector. With over 120 identified rare metal and rare earth deposits, Kazakhstan seeks to align its extraction and processing activities with international environmental standards amidst growing global demand for these critical minerals.
A key focus of the initiative is to identify potential environmental risks early, prevent pollution, and enhance monitoring systems before any large-scale mining operations commence. This proactive approach is intended to promote responsible mining practices, protect local communities, and safeguard regional ecosystems.
The Ministry of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan expressed that the partnership will facilitate the integration of modern green technologies and international environmental standards into the country’s mineral production processes. This aligns with the country’s broader goals of sustainable development and environmental protection.
Japan has reiterated its commitment to this initiative as part of its extensive cooperation efforts with Central Asian countries, emphasizing green development and regional resilience. Through this partnership, Kazakhstan stands to benefit from the rising global demand for critical minerals while ensuring environmentally responsible mining practices.
