During a conference in Azerbaijan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Israel to halt the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank and to take actions that could help de-escalate tensions in the region. Wang’s remarks were made in a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and they reflect China’s long-standing position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Wang emphasized the importance of seeking a political solution, describing the Palestinian issue as a significant historical injustice. He also advocated for the immediate expansion of humanitarian access to Gaza, highlighting the deteriorating humanitarian conditions there. China, he noted, is prepared to collaborate with the international community to encourage both parties to renew dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution.
China has consistently supported a two-state solution, backing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel. Additionally, Beijing has been active in promoting Palestinian reconciliation and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East.
In response, President Herzog underscored Israel’s desire for peace, while also pointing out security concerns, particularly those related to Iran and its regional allies. He stated that the discussions with Wang focused on bilateral relations and the broader regional dynamics.
The situation in Gaza remains precarious despite a ceasefire initiated in October 2025. Ongoing Israeli military actions, displacement, and humanitarian challenges persist, while progress toward advancing the ceasefire agreement has stalled due to mutual accusations of violations by Israel and Hamas.
This exchange between Chinese and Israeli officials highlights the ongoing international efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza, and revive diplomatic negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
