A pivotal meeting recently convened to address national legislation, capacity-building initiatives, and pressing issues concerning chemical safety and international cooperation. This two-day gathering assembled 18 delegates from OPCW National Authorities representing Eastern European Member States, who engaged in discussions about the practical challenges and best practices for executing the Chemical Weapons Convention. The event aimed to bolster regional collaboration in the realm of chemical safety and security.
The agenda featured presentations by participating countries, a comprehensive overview of the OPCW’s activities thus far, and dialogues on prevailing issues and obstacles. Notably, the discussions concentrated on the implications of artificial intelligence and the crucial role academia plays in maintaining chemical safety and deterring the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The programme underscored the need for innovative approaches to ensure the safe and peaceful use of chemistry.
Slovenia, a proactive participant in the OPCW, consistently upholds the mandates of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the development, production, stockpiling, and utilization of chemical weapons, mandating their destruction under international oversight. The Convention’s goal is to eradicate all chemical weapons and prevent their future use, a mission supported by its 193 States Parties, making it one of the most ratified international treaties. In Slovenia, the Chemicals Office is tasked with applying the Convention at the national level, overseeing industrial activities involving strategic chemicals, and partnering with the OPCW for international inspections.
On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the Organisation’s governing body responsible for promoting adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Over its two-year tenure, Slovenia intends to focus on stopping the spread of chemical weapons and reinforcing trust and security within the global community. During the OPCW Regional Meeting in Ljubljana, Boštjan Peršin, from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, highlighted Slovenia’s dedication to advancing new technologies and ensuring the safe and peaceful application of chemistry as key objectives on the Executive Council.
By collaborating with the OPCW, including co-hosting the current Regional Meeting, Slovenia has showcased its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes. This involvement underscores Slovenia’s resolve to contribute actively to the international community’s efforts in chemical weapons disarmament and non-proliferation.
