During his State of the Union Address, President Donald Trump delivered one of his sharpest warnings yet to Iran, making it unmistakably clear that the United States will not stand by while Tehran pursues nuclear weapons. Despite signalling a preference for diplomacy, Trump left no doubt about where Washington’s red line lies.
Trump accused Iran of resuming its nuclear and missile ambitions, warning that the threat has grown beyond the borders of the Middle East. He claimed that Iranian missiles are already capable of reaching Europe and US military bases overseas, with longer-range weapons under development.
The president acknowledged that two rounds of nuclear negotiations had already taken place this month between Washington and Tehran, even as the US military continues to strengthen its presence in the Gulf region. Yet Trump expressed frustration, saying Iran has yet to utter what he called the “secret words” — a firm commitment to never build a nuclear weapon.
Trump also revisited last June’s US military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, referring to it as Operation Midnight Hammer. He described it as a decisive blow that “obliterated” Iran’s weapons programme, while warning Tehran not to attempt rebuilding.
Despite the fierce rhetoric, Trump maintained that diplomacy remains his preferred path forward. However, any deal, he made clear, must come with an unconditional Iranian pledge to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions entirely.
